OC agency has offered parent-child classes on adolescence, puberty & more since 2002
Aliso Viejo, CA: The Birds & Bees Connection, which was founded in Costa Mesa and is currently based in Aliso Viejo, has been helping parents with “The Talk” since 2002. Founded by Registered Nurse, and former school nurse, Leslie Dixon, the agency has helped thousands of parents and children navigate the complicated tween and teen years. The Birds & Bees Connection’s unique parent-child courses arm parents with the information they need to become their children’s primary sex educators while opening comfortable lines of communication between parents and children.
Executive Director and founder Leslie Dixon was inspired to create her own sex education curriculum that emphasized including and empowering parents after years of seeing in-school sex and health education underperform because the parents weren’t involved. Since setting out on her own in 2002 with one class, the agency’s Rites of Passage course for 10-12 year-old girls or boys and their parents, her offerings have expanded and adapted in response to the advent of the internet, social media and homeschooling having gone mainstream.
The Birds & Bees Connection’s reach has grown, too, thanks to a new slate of online classes that can serve parents and children anywhere, their “Birds & Bees Connection: Girls Part 1” app and weekly Facebook Live talks with blogger Kristen Howerton of Rage Against the Minivan.
To celebrate 15 years of serving parents and children in Orange County and beyond, the Birds & Bees Connection has rolled back prices on July and August classes to 2002 rates, and they are running a contest on Facebook asking parents to share their stories of how they got “the talk.” Contest submissions are being accepted until July 12, and voting is open from July 13 to 31. The winning video will earn one lucky family a year of free classes from The Birds & Bees Connection. Entries are being accepted now at Facebook.com/birdsnbeesconnection.
Leslie Dixon will also be speaking at MommyCon in Costa Mesa on August 12, 2017. Tickets and information are available at mommycon.com/location/orange-county.
