OPRAH: Having the Sex Talk with Your Kids

A parent called Thursday afternoon to inform me that Oprah was having a show on “how to talk to your child about sex.” As a rule I don’t watch TV in the afternoon but I have to say the topic piqued my curiosity. Oprah’s guest was Dr. Laura Berman a well know gynecologist. I entered during an interview with a mother and daughter. The mother had been coached by Dr. Berman on how to talk with her daughter about the topic of sex.
I have to say the 5th grade girl seemed to be very comfortable being interviewed and talking about what she had learned from her mom. The mom, on the other hand, looked uncomfortable and made it very clear that she had definitely required Dr. Berman’s coaching to be able to have the conversation with her daughter.
The show continually stressed what an important part parents “should” play in educating their children about “sex;” unfortunately, most parents aren’t prepared to have those conversations.
The point of the show was to make talking with your child easier, but as the show progressed and the topics such as masturbation and self stimulation were discussed, the audience became obviously uncomfortable, especially Oprah’s friend Gayle.
As I watched the program I was once again reminded of the importance of making "talking with your children" easier … not more difficult.
So that’s why the Birds & Bees Connection offers courses that provide you with the language and confidence to continue talking with your child after the course has been completed.
Most importantly, our courses create a bond between parent and child, so that both will feel open and receptive about talking with the other now and in the future.
I would appreciate anyone emailing Oprah’s show and sharing your experience on taking one of our parent/child seminars.
I invite you to go to Oprah’s website (click here) and review the show’s material.
Anyone who watched the program can contact me at leslie@birdsnbeesconnection.com with your feedback.
Sincerely,
Leslie Dixon
